SHELTER: An Artistic Exploration of Homelessness
The Smokebrush Gallery - Main Gallery
The Smokebrush Gallery and Foundation for the Arts presents Shelter: An Artistic Exploration of Homelessness. Opening Friday, June 6, 5pm-8pm as a part of the 1st Friday Artwalk events. The exhibition continues through June 25.
Over 50 creative interpretations of the theme related to homelessness are presented in photography, paintings, mixed media, sculpture and pottery.
The Smokebrush Gallery is partnering with five Colorado Springs non-profit organizations that provide assistance to the area's homeless and working poor, including Catholic Charities-Marian House, Ecumenical Social Ministries, Interfaith Hospitality Network, Peak Vista-Homeless Health Center, and Springs Rescue Mission.
Through these partnerships, the Smokebrush Gallery and these organizations seek to enhance understanding of the show's theme through interaction with show patrons and additional activities.
During the show's opening reception (Friday, June 6, 5pm-8pm), patrons have the opportunity to speak with representatives from the organizations and learn what services they provide to the homeless and working poor. Donations to these organizations will be accepted at the opening reception and through the run of the show.
Visitors are encouraged to make monetary donations, as well as donations of canned goods, sleeping bags, tents and warm clothing, all in clean, useable condition. The gallery will host a public forum, consisting of a moderated panel discussion, to delve into issues specific to homelessness and measures being taken to address it in the Colorado Springs community, Thursday, June 19, 6pm-8pm.
Live music by Teri Garrison will entertain visitors during the opening reception. Teri has sung with and opened for Willie Nelson, Willie Dixon, Robben Ford, Leon Russell, Leo Kottke, and more.
